Recently, Lyme Disease and Leptospirosis have become more commonly diagnosed in our area of the nation.Dogs with high-risk of exposure should receive vaccinations to provide protection. Not every dog is high-risk,so when you are here for vaccines, we will discuss your dog’s lifestyle to make vaccination recommendations.
Lyme Disease is another problem in our area as more people move into and enjoy habitats that promote tick survival. Ticks carry Lyme disease which can cause dogs, or people, to have lethargy, stiffness and lameness. Some dogs may not even be able to walk!
Since preventing Lyme disease is much easier than treatment, we are strong believers in vaccination! We also recommend year-round flea and tick prevention to help prevent exposures to ticks that carry Lyme disease.
Leptospirosis is a type of bacteria that can cause liver and kidney disease in dogs. Unfortunately, Lepto can be harmful and even deadly to humans too! If your dog is at risk and does not have the vaccination, be sure to protect yourself!
Suspected risks are based on the way Leptospirosis can be spread. The bacteria that cause the disease is often located in water and moist environments. It is transmitted through an affected animal’s urine. It has been found in many rodents, raccoons, and other wildlife. Because Leptospirosis is so harmful, we recommend vaccinating any dogs that spends time outdoors where wildlife frequent. Hunting dogs are especially at-risk for the disease.
We are happy to discuss your dog’s risk for Leptospirosis or Lyme disease to determine whether your pet should receive protective vaccines, so please call us. If you’d prefer, these vaccines can also be discussed and instituted if your lifestyle has changed since previous visits when your dog is here for the annual wellness examination. Refills of flea and tick preventatives are important to remember as well!
